Historiador británico. Educado en la Universidad de Oxford y en Suiza, Gibbon escribió sus primeras obras en francés. En Londres llegó a ser un miembro del brillante círculo intelectual de Samuel Johnson. En un viaje a Roma se sintió inspirado para escribir la historia de la ciudad. La obra Historia de la decadencia y caída del Imperio Romano, 6 vol. (1776–88), es una narración continuada desde el s. II AD hasta la caída de Constantinopla en 1453. Aunque las conclusiones de Gibbon han sido modificadas por académicos posteriores, su perspicacia, perspectiva histórica y magnífico estilo literario han dado a sus escritos una reputación perdurable como una de las obras históricas más destacadas.
